I was still handling the dispatch when the bombing incidents in Gensan became rampant. I can't recall the exact date but at that time, our field engineer based in Gensan, Jun Villas was on sick leave, so we sent Nelson Tolato (Cebu FE) as back up. Around 10am or 11am, William Gagui received a text message from his friend who is based in Gensan that there was a bombing at the Gensan City Hall. My mind was already flowing with negative thoughts. Are they alright? Why can't I contact him? What will I tell his mom if she calls to check on his son?
Around 1pm, we received a call from him. I was relieved that nothing happened. Apparently, his mobile phone ran out of batteries that's why he couldn't be reached. On that same week, he is supposed to go to Cotabato for a service call. His girlfriend was calling me at 1 in the morning checking regarding the situation. She was working as a nurse in Malaysia at that time. She told me that they were actually fighting because she thought that he was just telling her lies about the Gensan situation and she just realized that he was telling the truth when she saw it on the news. At around 8am, Nelson called to inform that he was not able to catch the bus because he was not able to wake up early after another fight with his girlfriend. What could have been a mistake (for not waking up early) turned out to be a blessing. Apparently, the bus that he's supposed to be in was caught hostaged by the MILF. What a blessing indeed.
